"Sí, se puede"

I recently read this article and was really amazed by the spirit shown by the people of Cuba. The article is aptly titled - "The Power of Community". The will to succeed and the optimistic struggle of this community has definitely paid off in the last 40 years. By profession, I promote energy efficiency and self-sustainability. But, the thing the article inspired me was the importance the Cuban community and government gives to the educational and medical welfare of its people. Mankind survived all the adversities of the years of civilization because people cared for eachother. This basic concept was lost somewhere in the midst of all the industrial and technological revolutions in the past century. We have become greedy, we have set our sights beyond what is really needed to sustain a happy and self-sufficient life. There is no argument that human nature is to keep exploring and wanting more but the roots of civilization must not be forgotten at the same time. We have to re-establish our wants and try to focus on the needs.

"Yes, it can be done".

Inspiring definitely!! Thinking of it, isnt it really that easy to be self-sufficient.

Amazing what "LIVING TOGETHER" can do.

This article sohuld help us stop saying "NEGATIVE" things about India, and give us the strength to come back and help the country out.

"A Better World is Possible." and if this is possible, sure a BETTER INDIA IS NOT VERY DIFFICULT, if we Indians can live as a community by seriously coming back to the topic of discussion just like we return to this blog and check what's going on!!!

Can we?!!

Very informative, interesting and inspiring article ! I had never known before that there are so many positive social metrics in Cuba ! As you had rightly pointed out - the developments on health and educational fronts are trule amazing. I cannot just stop wishing desperately for something like this to happen in India - more so in the light of recent developments on Reservation in already scarce good educational facilities - where in quality education of choice is made available to everyone by simply creating and making available the facilities in abundance, which will obviate the need for a fight or struggle to have a share of the same.

Wishing that it happens in India also is good. But doing something about it is what is needed. Cuba is a small country with a small population and it is easier to mould the mindset of a few compared to a country like India. But that is a good starting point. If each of us can influence a few to make a change, then we really can see a change.

I would like to be a part of something bigger than just writing a blog about it.

Cubans did not wait for someone to do it. It is a series of "POSITIVE ACTION" on part of INDIVIDUALS. I'm sure we can all do things like that. Only thing is that we have HESITATED to attempt it in our life for whatever UNKNOWN reason. It will ONLY happen in India - if every one of us NOT ONLY WISHES that someone ELSE will do, but do it OURSELVES. Wont it?

Many things. It could be a simple thing for the school like getting the blackboards painted every 2-3 months. It could be teaching a few kids in your neighbourhood to read and write. It could be small things. Small droplets of water make a mighty ocean. Isnt' it.

you hit right the nail on it's head... just economic reforms and and closing the loose ends here and there will only buy us more time on this planet, but to keep it alive and healthy we have to rethink our way of life...
